Predictive Operations

Predictive Operations is an operating model for OBx-connected assets — trucks, trailers, plant and equipment — in which live operational data, predictive signals and embedded compliance rules together govern which actions are allowed, when they can occur and under what conditions. Where predictive analytics forecasts what might happen, Predictive Operations decides what is allowed to happen.

What Predictive Operations means

Predictive Operations is an operating model for OBx-connected assets, including trucks, trailers, plant and equipment. It combines live operational data, predictive signals and embedded compliance rules to govern which actions are allowed, when they can occur and under what conditions.

Heavy transport is OneRoad’s initial market; the operating model extends to any OBx-connected asset.

Predictive analytics tells you what might happen; Predictive Operations decides what is allowed to happen.

Why the operating model matters

Many operational systems in asset-heavy industries are designed primarily to record, report or alert. They capture what a vehicle, trailer or machine did, store it, and present it back — in a log, a report, an exception list or a dashboard. That is useful and often necessary work.

The difficulty is one of connection rather than capability. Information may well exist before the work occurs, but it can sit apart from the rules that apply to that work and apart from the point at which the decision is made. Rules live in one place, operational data in another, and the judgement that joins them often rests with a person under time pressure. Each additional system can add another record and another screen without bringing the decision any earlier.

The gap is not a shortage of data, and it is not a shortage of forecasting. It is that data and prediction are not always connected to the applicable rules at the moment an action is about to be taken. Recording and reporting remain necessary. On their own they do not govern operations.

How the model works

  1. Connected asset and operational inputs
  2. Live operational data
  3. Predictive signals + embedded compliance rules
  4. Governed decision
  5. Allowed action and conditions

Predictive signals and applicable rules are parallel inputs to the same decision; neither alone produces a governed outcome. The result is an allowed action with its conditions attached, not an automatic intervention.

Heavy transport is OneRoad’s initial market. It is the first market in which the operating model is being applied.

The operating model extends to any OBx-connected asset. Extension beyond heavy transport is a property of the category as defined; it is not a statement that OneRoad currently serves those markets.

Predictive analytics and Predictive Operations

Predictive analytics is a forecasting discipline. It reads historical and live data and estimates likelihood — a component may fail, a delay may occur, a threshold may be crossed. Its output often informs a person or a downstream process.

Predictive Operations is an operating model rather than a forecasting output. It combines predictive input with the compliance rules applicable to the asset and the work, and uses both to govern which actions are permitted, when they may occur and under what conditions. The output is a governed decision rather than a probability.

Predictive signals are inputs within Predictive Operations; they are not the category name.

The two are not alternatives. Prediction is one of the inputs Predictive Operations governs with.
